How To Get Better Gas Mileage

With gas prices getting higher every week, getting better gas mileage out of your vehicle is being more important.

Gas PumpGone are the days of twenty dollar fill-ups, gone are the days of dollar a gallon gasoline and today is the day you wanted to get better gas mileage out of your car or truck. Times are tight, so are wallets and you just can't spring for a brand new fuel efficient car right now. So, let's start saving money for free with a few things you can do to squeeze out as much efficiency as you can out of the gas you just pumped.

Best Gas Mileage Saving Tips

They say the best things in life are free, well I don't know about that but I do know of some pretty darn good things you could be doing to save gas that doesn't cost a thing. Here are the top 5 ways to get better MPG out of your car today:

  1. Check your tire pressure. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal - but improper tire presure not only wears your tires out faster it can cost you alot of fuel. Airing your tires up to their maximum rated pressure can save 1-3 MPG versus underinflated tires.
  2. Check your air filter. Seriously, a dirty air filter restricts flow and makes your engine work harder to get what it can. This isn't as important on newer cars as it once was, but it's a sure fire way to save 1-2 MPG on most vehicles over a clogged filter.
  3. Use the brakes less. Really. You know, all that fuel is used to speed your car up, do you really need to hit the brakes so much requiring you to give it more gas to get back to speed? The easiest way to do this is allowing alittle more space between you and the car in front.
  4. Drive slower. Yeah I know this isn't any fun, but honestly the aerodynamic drag on your car at 80 miles per hour is tremendous. You don't have to "drive 55" but even slowing down 5 MPH over a long trip will probably pay for a meal at McDonald's.
  5. Speed up slower. Another one of those "hey, that's no fun" suggestions, but it's really effective at saving gas. You don't have to speed up like Grandma on Sunday, but using anything more that about 1/4 throttle is probably costing you several tankes of gas a year.
